Father in-law Dilemma?
I’ve been put in an awkward position and am not sure what to do. My wife’s Father does volunteer work with a program that helps older people with no families.
I’ve discovered he has taken advantage, not only of of someone’s trust but clearly with someone suffering with losing a grip on reality.
In a nut shell, he came across this persons, widows diamond engagement ring, which I would guess is probably valued at about $5,000 – $6,000. Told this old man that it was worth about $150 “as there is no re-sale in diamonds and that was what the weight of the gold would be” and purchased the ring from him.
The kicker is that then turns around and gives this to my wife, in some grand gesture and she’s walking around wearing it.
Seriously, I am just disgusted at the whole situation. What should I do?
How I know… He told us this to our face. My wife is just gushing about what a generous guy her Dad and believing this BS and I am thinking.. OMG YOU SCUMBAG!
Why do you know about this in the first place? Did he brag to you about it?
I think you should sit down and talk to him about it. Tell him that you think it was unethical. If he doesn’t listen, then talk to your wife about it.
What he did is not illegal. He did buy the ring. The guy he bought it from did not bother to go have it appraised himself. YES, he took advantage. YES, it is wrong. It makes me a bit sick thinking about it, too. If I were your wife, I would be really uncomfortable wearing it. I would go sell it, then give the money to the guy and explain what happened.
