Round Diamond Loose
When trying to find a deal on a loose diamond what should I look for?
ok… so it’s time for me to find a diamond for an engagement ring. I’ve already found the band, and will have it put on at a local jewelry store, but I always am out to look for a deal. How can I find a round loose diamond that I know I am not going to get ripped off on. Are there any other things I need to watch out for than the three Cs and which are the most important? I know the color, cut, clarity deal and know enough about diamonds to know what I want at a jewelry store, but how do I know when I’m not getting ripped off. I would make sure that I buy from someone reputable. Please give me some advice!! thanks!
Wow! Very exciting time for you! It is great that you are seeking advice before diving in head first. My fiance and I had my engagement ring designed at a jeweler and it was definitely a learning experience.
First of all, shop around. One thing we found was that if you get a diamond right below a “benchmark” it can cut costs significantly. I.e. .98 carat or 1.9 carat instead of 1 or 2.
Second, always always always ask for a GIA grading report. Don’t just settle for something “in house”. It will list out all of the 4 C’s as well as let you know if the diamond was chemically altered to make it look nicer than it is! None of this can really be seen with the naked eye so it is important to know exactly what you are getting. GIA is non-profit so they have no agenda. Once you can compare the GIA reports for many diamonds and get pricing it is a lot easier to know what kind of deals there are out there!
