what does SI1 – SI2 mean concerning diamonds?
Is it good? my diamond is 1/4kt. marquise cut
I am a Graduate Gemologist and I have worked in jewelry for a long time. I learned about diamonds from the best that there is out there. SI1 and SI2 are very clost to each other. These are grades that are given to the diamond when a grader looks at the stone in a microscope magnified 10 times. When a grader looks at the stone and see “noticable” inclusions, then it gets the “SI” rating. Then they take a closer look and give it a 1 if it is in the better side of the SI range or a 2 if lower.
What this means to you is if you have a really good eye, then you can see the effects of the inclusions when the light comes out. The inclusions are large ehohugh to block light as the light bounces in the stone and look a little bit fuzzy when it comes out. A 1/4 marquise will be ok as a SI2.
These grades are reletive to the size of the stone. This means that a larger stone can have larger flaws and have the same grade, it is gased on proportions.
I reccommend at least a SI1 rating but you can never buy a diamond based on the rating or the 4 Cs. There are many more features that will effect a diamon’s beauty and value.
