All About The Chinese Lunar Calendar
A combined solar and lunar calendar, the Chinese Lunar Calendar has 12 months and determines its dates based on the cycles of the moon. Each 60 year cycle has a celestial stemm and a terrestrial branch with names of corresponding animals on the zodiac. This calendar dates back over 2000 years since 2637 BCE.
Twelve animals make up the calendar, it is said they were summoned by Buddha before he left the earth. As a reward to them he named a year after each one in the order that they showed themselves to him. It is believed in the Chinese culture that the year a person is born is ruled by their animal, the animal that hides in the heart.
The first year of the Chinese lunar calendar is the year of the Rat. It is said that the rat tricked the other animals and he jumped into first position pushing the cat into the river making them enemies for all of time. People born in the years 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984 and 1996 are said to be very generous, charming and imaginative. They have a tendency to be quick tempered and critical and make good publicists, writers and critics. Some famous people born under this sign are Burt Reynolds, Englebert Humperdinck, Marlon Brando and Ron Moody.
The year of the snake people are said to be deep thinkers. Born in the years 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989 and 2001 They tend to be romantics and very charming people. They can be a bit stingy with their money and often dismissive to others. Ideally they make good teachers and psychiatrists. Some famous people born under this sign are Bob Dylan, Jean Simmons, Neil Diamond, Burt Bacharach, Sir Roger Banister, Paddy Ashdown and Vivienne Westwood.
The year of the tiger people are adventurous and bold. They are charming and have initiative and tend to be risk takers. They make good race car drivers, explorers and bosses. Oliver Reed, Elliott Gould, Jodie Foster, Mel Brooks, and Chuck Berry are some famous Tigers.
The charming and intelligent people born in the years 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, and 2003 are those born under the sign of the sheep. They are elegant and artistic and like material things. They can be worriers and complainers and make good beachcombers, actors or gardeners. Some famous people born under this sign are George Harrison, Prunella Scales, John Major, Leonard Nimoy, Mikhail Gorbachev and Gene Hackman.
Today the Chinese and Asian cultures use the Gregorian calendar for daily activities but the Chinese Lunar Calendar is used for traditional holidays such as Chinese New Year and for auspicious dates for events such as a marriage.
